Vijaykumari who was also known as Viji met her ex-husband, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev in Mysore, India. Soon after, their meeting led to an exchange of love letters and then marriage in 1984. In 1990, the couple had their only child, a daughter named Radhe Jaggi. When Vijaykumari was alive, she is said to have worked in a financial institution. Unfortunately, on January 23, 1997, she transitioned from the practice of mahasamadhi, which is the act of consciously and intentionally leaving one’s body.

details of her death

It has been established that a yogi or yogini who realizes the state of nirrikalpa samādini in yoga will in due course consciously step out of his body and this was the case of Vijaykumari. In oriented culture, many Tibetan, Hindu and Zen masters have experienced such a graceful exit from this world. Vijaykumari’s Mahasamadhi has been reported to have happened in a program performed at her ex-husband’s foundation, the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore, India, witnessed by hundreds of people.

A few months after Viji’s death, police reportedly filed a complaint with her father that he was suspicious of his daughter’s death, citing that she may have been murdered. The suspicion was based on the fact that his request to see his daughter’s body was not approved by Sadhguru as he cremated her body immediately after the incident instead of burying her and secondly that in their country nobody cremated anyone, who attained Mahasamadhi.

The New Indian Express newspaper reported on August 1997 that a case had been filed against Sadhguru, accusing him of causing his wife’s death. The case has been referred to Coimbatore Police. However, eight months later, a news report stated that the case was closed following an investigation by police that found no wrongdoing and that there was no reason for further investigation. Although the case was dismissed for lack of evidence, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev has been in the news constantly after a series of allegations about his wife’s death.
