David comes from a family of three siblings and was the only boy raised by his parents. As such, two of his sisters, Gretchen and Janice Letterman, have been identified.

On April 12, 1947, David Letterman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents were Dorothy Marie Letterman Mengering, a secretary at the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, and Harry Joseph Letterman, a florist.

Harry, his father, was the first to die. At the age of 57, he passed away in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, on February 13, 1973. On the other side, his mother, who was 95 years old, passed away in Carmel, Indiana, on April 11, 2017.

One day before her well-known son turned 70, Dorothy Mengering, the mother of David Letterman, passed away last week at the age of 95.
