Grand Daddy I.U. was born in Queens, New York, and raised in Hempstead, Long Island, where his brother, also known as Kay Cee, encouraged him to start performing. In 1989, he recorded a demo tape and gave it to Biz Markie, who signed him to Cold Chillin’ Records.

Smooth Assassin, his debut album, was released in 1990 and yielded two Rap Chart hits: “Something New” (number 11), which sampled James & Bobby Purify’s “I’m Your Puppet,” and “Sugar Free” (number 9). He became known for his high-end tailored attire, always wearing a suit and tie in public.

In the 1990s, Grand Daddy I.U. appeared on several hip hop albums, including Big L’s Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous and Positive K’s The Skills Dat Pay da Bills.

Grand Daddy I.U. did ghostwriting and production work for Markie and Roxanne Shanté but fell out with Markie over a publishing credit dispute for the tracks on his debut.

In 1994, he released his sophomore album, Lead Pipe. “Represent,” the album’s lead single, charted modestly on the US Dance Singles Chart. Because the album received little promotion, Grand Daddy I.U. stopped rapping for nearly a decade after the standalone single “All About Money” in 1996.

Stick to the Script, his third album, was released in 2007, and featured production from Large Professor and Marco Polo, as well as appearances from 2Pac, DV Alias Khryst, and Pudgee Tha Phat Bastard.

In 2017, he collaborated with long-time collaborator Pudgee Tha Phat Bastard on Long Island emcee Lantz’s album Still Hear. “Til The Casket” and “Yesterday” were both written by the duo.

I.U. released the album The Essence in 2020, which featured Method Man, Lil Fame, Sadat X, Craig G, Large Professor, and a slew of other artists. I.U. produced all of the songs on the album.
