Brit Hume bio

Brit Hume was born June 22, 1943 in Washington, DC, christened Alexander Britton Hume. He is the son of George Graham Hume and Virginia Powell Hume. Thanks to her paternal line, Brit is part Scottish. He was educated at St. Albans School, Washington, D.C., around the same time as former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, and graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1965.

Journalism career

Hume first worked for the Hartford Times newspaper before moving on to gain additional work experience at the United Press International. In 1970 he had the opportunity to work with Jack Anderson for two years. Anderson then published a number of classified articles which indicated that the Nixon regime had favored Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. After this exposure, Anderson, his staff, including Brit Hume and his family, were briefly placed under CIA surveillance in 1972.

The documents that have been made public about President Ford’s regime made possible by the US Congressional hearings in conjunction with the Freedom of Information Act trial. This led to Brit Hume becoming a Washington press editor of a critical journal named More Magazine.

Subsequently, in 1973, Brit worked as an ABC consultant. In 1976, he landed a new correspondent role involved in covering activities taking place in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate for a period of 11 years. He earned his first Oscar nomination for his close-up documentary program on ABC in 1979. Hume was then assigned to report on Walter Mondale’s presidential campaign in 1984 as well as George HW Bush’s in 1988. The following year, he was promoted to Chief White House Correspondent for ABC, where he was assigned to cover the administrations of Presidents Bush and Bill Clinton respectively.

In 1996 Brit left ABC to join Fox News Network. At the time, his wife was newly appointed Washington bureau chief. There, Brit became editor of Fox News Washington. After starting at Fox News, Brit began considering starting a Washington-based television program for 6 p.m. time slot. Given the Lewinsky scandal which began in January 1998, Brit’s wife suggested to him that since the story was so well known at the time, it would be wise for him to start a new show immediately and he did. The Special Report with Brit Hume debuted shortly after and became number one on cable news at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time range for several years.

Retiring from Fox

In July 2008, it was announced that Brit was to retire as Special Report anchor at the end of the year, but he was to remain on Fox News to perform a few major roles. On December 23, 2008, he hosted his final episode as the special report anchor, announcing that Bret Baier, then-chief White House correspondent for Fox News, would be his replacement. Brit also announced he would stay with Fox News as a senior political analyst and regular panelist for the Fox News Sunday show.

On January 3, 2010, Hume generated some controversy when on Fox News Sunday he advised golfer Tiger Woods to convert to Christianity to end his troubles. Brit’s comments came after Woods’ adultery scandal came to light and his relationship with his family deteriorated. On September 6, 2016, Hume was named the anchor of On Record after the show’s longtime anchor Greta Van Susteren left Fox News. He then worked as an anchor for the program until the end of the 2016 election. Brit’s first show as On the Record drew 2.4 million viewers.

Family – wife, son

Not much is known about the first Brit Humemariage with Clare Jacobs Stoner except that he is divorced from her. Prior to their divorce, they had a son named Sandy Hume (also known as Alexander Britton Hume Jr.) born September 2, 1969. He worked as a reporter for The Hill newspaper and is credited with being responsible for publishing the story of the aborted 1997 political attempt to replace House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Sadly, Sandy Hume committed suicide on February 22, 1998. To this day, the National Press Club still honors his memory with its annual Sandy Hume Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Journalism.
